If Jesus was led by the Spirit in all the gifts in His ministry how much more do we need the Spirit now in the 21st Century. I personally depend totally on the Word of God, the spoken word and all the gifts of the Holy Spirit and by doing this I am following His footsteps.
Jesus left His example for us to follow. He healed the sick, He performed miracles and wonders all by the Spirit. He said we will do more than this, (not greater than this because Jesus is greater than us and no one in history did greater things than Jesus did) so let us compare ourselves with Him and consider why such signs & wonders are not happening today. Why were people following him in the thousands? What happened to our churches? What is missing in our meetings? How was the first century Church different to the churches we see all around us today. I believe that today the Holy Spirit is not in our meetings, or if He is we don't give him the lead, instead we take it upon ourselves to lead the meetings. Our churches are entertaining us with music. We are not seeing all the gifts of the Holy Spirit in operation. When Jesus ministered the Holy Spirit was taking the lead. This is not the case with us today. We need the Holy Spirit because we need revival. In 1982 with the movement of the Holy Spirit around the world, I was asked to write a book on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I wrote it in Arabic and after it was printed it sold out in two months. We then saw hundreds of ministers baptised in the Spirit. Many thousands of Christians were used by God mightily and then I was led to translate the book from Arabic into English because this book had such an impact on revival in our lives. The question is who brings revival? The Holy Spirit impacted people on the day of Pentecost. Act 2:5 There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. Act 2:6 When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited, because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages. Act 2:7 In amazement and wonder they exclaimed, “These people who are talking like this are Galileans!
The purpose of these gifts are to fulfill the will of God in a changing world. No matter how the world changes God's principles always stay the same. We see evil increasing everyday; this is the reason that we also need to be filled & refilled with the Holy Spirit everyday. Technology advances ever more swiftly, the world increasingly depends on the power of technology but if & when this power collapses we will not collapse with it because we have the Holy Spirit who is more advanced & powerful than any technology. We are living in the last days, we are facing new & greater challenges every day, we cannot face them & hope to survive without the Holy Spirit. The controlling power of the Media is based on deception, the Holy Spirit is Truth. He is the Spirit of truth, able to demolish the lies of the enemy and to help us discern what is right and what is wrong. The power of Lust is controlling the world and it is a very powerful weapon in the hand of the enemy, but we have the Spirit of self control to destroy and overcome the spirit of Lust. The power of lies is also a very powerful weapon used against Christians. This is another reason that we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, we will become free from the lies of the enemy and be able to set others free. The power Satan wields through witchcraft is yet another reason that we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, we then can know that Satan has no hold on us. Other reasons we need the Holy Spirit are because of our fight against the power of money, the power of false prophets, the power of cults etc., all of which are snares the Christian must face. We need these gifts because we need understanding, not knowledge alone. The problem with many is they have knowledge without understanding. Many know of the gifts of the Spirit but have no understanding of how to use them. Col 1:9 For this reason we have always prayed for you, ever since we heard about you. We ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will, with all wisdom and understanding that his spirit gives. Col1:10 Then you will be able to live as the Lord wants and will always do what pleases him. Your lives will produce all kinds of good deeds, and you will grow in your knowledge of God. This means that the Holy Spirit gives understanding as well as knowledge. To know the truth is good, but we need to understand the truth. There is a difference between knowledge and understanding. Many know the truth, but they are not free, to be free you need to understand the truth and accept it. We need the same gifts of the Holy Spirit as the early Church had. They “invaded” the world with the gospel of Jesus empowered by these gifts and Church history is witness for this fact. For four centuries there was no written New Testament in the hands of Christians to preach from, they used miracles and wonders and healings and all of the gifts to convince the pagan world of the truth of the gospel. We need the gifts to actively build the kingdom of God outside the established church as Jesus did. In Church we often play at the kingdom of God but sadly when we go outside we do not practice what we preach. If you are filled with real Holy Spirit, you will show it in your home first, you will build your family, and your children also will be able to move in the gifts. You will move in the gifts in your work and wherever you go, like Jesus. I have often advised churches to take their members to parks or wherever any gatherings occur. To have lunch, inviting people to eat with them and share their lives with them, moving in all the gifts. We need the Holy Spirit because we are in the last days. Joel 2:28 “Afterward I will pour out my Spirit on everyone: your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your old people will have dreams, and your young people will see visions. Joel 2: 29 At that time I will pour out my Spirit even on servants, both men and women. Joel 2:30 “I will give warnings of that day in the sky and on the earth; there will be bloodshed, fire, and clouds of smoke. Joel 2:31 The sun will be darkened, and the moon will turn red as blood before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes. Act 2:16 Instead, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about: Act 2:17 ‘This is what I will do in the last days, God says: I will pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your young men will see visions, and your old men will have dreams. Act 2:18 Yes, even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will proclaim my message. |
